Insights · Weekly recap

The rails under merchant payments are being rebuilt.

Every Monday, one page: what moved last week in card costs, payment rails and AI agents, and what it means for the business behind the counter.

Weekly recap · No. 4 · Oct 5 – 11, 2026 · Published Mon, Oct 12

Personal AI agents got a proposed rulebook for dealing with businesses.

Meta and Sierra proposed an open standard for how personal agents work with businesses, and American Express said it intends to cover some agent mistakes. Samsung is bringing USDC to 82 million U.S. phones, and stablecoin checkout became a one-click add-on for Yuno merchants. The cost line was quiet, but October fee notices are landing.

Cost line

A quiet week in court and a busy month on statements.

What getting paid costs

No new station this week. Mastercard's decline service fee doubles from 0.03% to 0.06% this month, and a new $25 handling fee applies to certain card-not-present chargebacks. Visa adds new fees and dispute-rule changes from Oct 23 to 25.Source: Merchant Cost Consulting

At the counter: network fee changes reach merchants through processor notices, sometimes bundled with rate increases the networks never required.Source: Merchant Cost Consulting

Our take

When the courts go quiet, the fee schedule keeps moving.

Rails line

Digital dollars arrive through doors people already use.

Samsung Wallet will add USDC transfers to 60+ countries in late October, first on 82 million U.S. Galaxy phones. Samsung says it is considering online payments and in-store tap next.Source: American Banker

At the counter: each of these plugs into something customers already carry: a card, a phone wallet, an existing checkout. Paying at a physical counter is still the step nobody has made routine.

Our take

Digital dollars are coming in through familiar doors, and the counter is the last one to open.

Agent line

The rules for how agents talk to businesses are being written now.

When your customer is an AI

  • Oct 6

  • Oct 6

  • Oct 10 – 11

Elon Musk shows Grok ordering Lego kits for him. Visa, separately, warns that fraudsters can build fake storefronts to trick shopping agents.Source: Yahoo Finance (Moneywise)

At the counter: an online store can open a door for agents through its website or API. A restaurant, a salon or a clinic has no such door yet, so agents still reach them by phone.Source: The Paypers · Let's Data Science

Our take

Platforms are writing the rules for agents and businesses, and merchants who show up early will be readable on day one.
