Shopify opened its stores to an AI agent the same day Amazon blocked it.

Shopify switched on Shop Pay for Meta's Muse across every Shopify store while Amazon shut Muse out, and six banks published voluntary principles for agent shopping. SoFi began settling card payments in a stablecoin issued by a national bank. A quiet week on the cost line.

The settlement fight drags on.

What getting paid costs

No new station this week. The Visa–Mastercard swipe-fee settlement, preliminarily approved in June, still faces objections from Walmart and retail groups.Source: Constantine Cannon (citing Law360 and Sky News)

At the counter: nothing changes on the rate card until the court rules, and even then the proposed cut is 0.1 percentage points for five years.Source: PYMNTS

Our take

Waiting for the courts is a strategy measured in basis points.

Rails line

A national bank settles card payments in its own stablecoin.

Digital dollars reach checkout

SoFi goes live with stablecoin settlement on Mastercard's network. It is moving its entire $25 billion card program to SoFiUSD, a stablecoin issued by a national bank, and merchants can receive settlement in a bank account and withdraw at any hour.Source: SoFi

At the counter: settlement that arrives at any hour, weekends included, is the part a merchant feels.Source: SoFi

Our take

The card networks have started running stablecoins instead of fighting them.

Agent line

Platforms open up while retailers that own the shelf close the door.

When your customer is an AI

  • Sep 21

Shopify turns on Shop Pay for Muse across every Shopify-powered store. The same day, Amazon blocks Muse from its marketplace, saying access by an unauthorized AI agent violates its Conditions of Use.Source: Forkast · Wikipedia

Six banks publish voluntary principles for agent shopping. NatWest, Bank of America, ING, Capital One, Commonwealth Bank and ASB wrote them; they carry no enforcement and do not say who pays for an agent's mistake.Source: Yahoo Finance

  • Sep 22

404 Media reports that some Muse phone calls to businesses were placed by trained human agents in a call center during the beta. How often that happened is unclear.Source: Let's Data Science

At the counter: online, an agent gets in through an API. A local business has no such door, so agents call on the phone, sometimes with a person on the line.Source: Forkast · Let's Data Science

Our take

A marketplace of other people's stores has to stay open, but local businesses still need a door of their own.
